Welcome to our colourful and cosy studio, where Max and Zoe will guide you through our step-by-step process to create your own amazing works of collage art.
We’re a process-driven studio where rather than working from an example, we teach you the mindset, skills, and techniques to create your own unique designs using our second-hand, recycled, and donated materials. We even show you an ingenious way to collage without glue, freeing you up to create & capture numerous, re-mixed artworks.
Doing something new can be scary (it’s totally normal to feel nervous) so let us assure you that in our safe space and with the skills, structure, and support to play and experiment, you’ll be amazed by what you make. You’ll leave That Paper Joint feeling surprised, inspired, and open to the fun of collage!

Not at all! In fact, we actively encourage our participants to come without ideas, and instead, we’ll show you how to play and respond to what you find in our materials.

The daytime sessions are suitable for children 8+ years plus. We require a guardian to accompany any children under the age of 13. Please get in touch if you have any questions.

At that paper joint, we want everyone to feel welcome. There are some access details to share about our 100-year-old building. When booking you also have the opportunity to let us know of any requirements you may have. Studio
The front entrance has one step of 5 inches high, which then gives you full access to the gallery, studio & workshop space.
There is a variety of seating options within the studio.
Our floors are polished tiles.

There are three 7.5 inch tall steps to get to our rear bathrooms.
The two bathrooms have swingings doors and handrails, with a cubicle width of 75cm.
The closest wheelchair-accessible public bathroom is 300m away on Victoria Street, outside Small Axe Kitchen.

Maximillian Malone
All our workshops (unless otherwise stated), are hosted by that paper joint’s founder, Maximillian Malone.
Max has a casual & easy-going style for sharing his expertise. With years of experience teaching his passion to others, Max has developed a unique & attentive approach, able to assist & guide your creative experience, regardless of previous skill, background, or ability.
In his company he aims to make everyone feel welcome and at ease inside the studio, and his love for the medium of collage is absolutely infectious! Above all, Max tries to instill his core belief that ‘an artist is not a special kind of person, but every person is a special kind of artist.’
Zoe Crook
During our workshops, you’ll also be in the company of that paper joint’s co-founder Zoe Crook, who brings an extra level of care and hospitality experience to all of our creative sessions.
Her empathetic nature and compassionate presence provide the foundation of our comfortable, warm, and inviting atmosphere. Rest assured in Zoe’s hands, you’ll be looked after and relaxed to enjoy every moment.
Franky Rocket
Our most popular team member is our hairy front-of-house pup.
She’s a very good girl and is adjusting well to her ‘shop dog’ responsibilities.
